Welcome to Yala National Park, Sri Lanka's most popular destination for wildlife photography and safaris. In 2026, Yala remains world-renowned for having one of the highest leopard densities on the planet. Covering over 97,000 hectares, this park is a tapestry of lagoons, grasslands, and dense scrub timber.
While sightings are never guaranteed in the wild, an expert Sri Lanka travel plan and an experienced tracker will significantly increase your chances of witnessing a leopard in its natural habitat.
1. Best Time for Leopard Sightings
The best window for spotting leopards is during the dry season, which typically runs from February to July. As the vegetation thins out and the smaller water holes disappear, animals are forced out of the scrub and congregate around the large lagoons.
Note: Block 1 of the park is usually closed for maintenance during September and October. Check our Monthly Weather Guide for alternative parks during this period.

3. Wildlife Photography Tips
- Golden Hour: Morning safaris start at 6:00 AM. This is when the light is mellow and leopards are often seen sunning themselves on granite outcrops.
- Lens Choice: A 200mm - 400mm zoom lens is ideal for leopard and bird photography.
- Stability: Jeeps can be bumpy. Use a beanbag instead of a tripod for stabilization in the vehicle.
