Dambulla Cave Temple (also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla) is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991, this sanctuary consists of five separate caves under a vast overhanging rock, housing 153 Buddha statues and murals that cover an area of 2,100 square meters.
Dating back to the 1st century BC, the temple has been a place of continuous worship for over two millennia. In 2026, it remains a cornerstone of the Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle experience.

3. Cultural Significance
The temple served as a place of refuge for King Valagamba during his 14-year exile. Upon regaining his throne, he converted the caves into magnificent temples as a token of gratitude. Succeeding kings continued to add to the artistry, creating the masterpiece we see today.
4. Expert Tips for Visitors
- Temple Etiquette: You must cover your shoulders and knees. Hats must be removed and shoes left at the entrance.
- Timing: Visit in the late afternoon to avoid the midday sun and enjoy the sunset from the hill.
